Restaurant Det Glade Vanvid is a concept restaurant by the old marina in Aarhus, Denmark. Sofie Ladefoged has skillfully transformed this former fish-auction, into an elegant and sophisticated dining room, in which the interaction between details and materials creates both tactility and striking beauty.
The entire interior is characterized by the use of timber. The lobby walls are lined with wide oak planks, the elegant, yet simultaneously robust wardrobe, also constructed from oak, the buffet and the café tables, all specifically designed for the restaurant by Sofie Ladefoged.
Beside timber, the materials used are brass, concrete and leather. Brass is repeated in the lamps hanging in a tight grid from the ceiling, defining the transition from space to ceiling. This cleverly adjusts the semi-industrial space to the scale of the human body. The window frames and the VOLA fixtures in the bathrooms, and on the buffets, are all kept in brass, matching the lamps. All visible screws are either brass or have been painted black, and this way either create ornamentation or are inconspicuous.
The renovation and refurbishment of the restaurant is a thoroughly thought through into every detail, which is a trademark of the architect, Sofie Ladefoged. The coherence between concept, detail and materials is inspired by the 1960s classic moderns, combined with a flair for minimalism and comprehensive knowledge of materials. This creates pure aesthetics and lasting quality.
